About Doris
Doris the Elephant is a special piece at Hossle Woodworks. It’s named after our craftsman’s grandmother, Doris. Doris Coffman (b. 1930, d. 2007) didn’t live the easiest of lives. At a young age she lost most of her sight and was considered legally blind. As she progressed through life, she lost most of her hearing, became diabetic, and survived cancer. Despite the hardships, she found Joy. Her first love was her husband, Jim, and they shared a bond that has likely yet to be rivaled - it was an embodiment of the word “love” itself. Her second love was her collection of elephant figurines. For whatever reason, she loved elephants and her home was filled with hundreds of elephant statues, toys, photos, tables - you name it, the list goes on.
This sculptural elephant has been created in her memory.

Conceptualized and designed to honor our craftsman’s late grandmother, Doris, the smooth, simple shape of these elephants brings sophistication to what is sometimes viewed as a whimsical animal. These gentle giants are all style and class, though.
The wooden elephants are a great gift option for an expecting family, but they're also wonderful as decor in any room of the house. Crafted with Baltic birch layers, they have a walnut face on both sides that’s smooth and rich in color thanks to our oil and wax finish.

(01) Baltic Birch & Walnut
This decor piece is made using a beautiful high-end layered Baltic birch from Columbia Forest Products®. Each of the 13 layers are solid wood, and a thick face of walnut wraps it in rich tones. The Baltic birch is a sustainable product and will be very stable as the seasons change, unlike some solid wood furniture.
While many furniture makers conceal the edges of the material, we have made it our signature look to highlight the striped layers. Not only does this give a nod to the designers of the mid-century era, it makes every piece by us a work of art, and a unique, one-of-a-kind, creation.
(02) Finish
We finish our products with a mixture of pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil and wax. This means less harsh chemicals when we are doing the work, and a safer breathing experience for you. The end result is a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like a silky-smooth piece of wood.
Another benefit to the finish is that it allows for easy repair when scratches happen. Buff out the scratch with a piece of high-grit sandpaper and rub in some Howard Feed-N-Wax® and your piece is as good as new!

(01) How do I care for this product?
Details can be found on our FAQ page. That said, in general, treat the piece with kindness. A damp cloth is all you need to clean it (definitely no harsh chemicals), and the piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when needed.
(02) Are both sides finished in walnut or do they have to face to the left?
These wooden elephants are totally reversible. Feel free to have them trekking North, South, East or West, or huddled in a circle if that’s what brings you joy!
